What Canonical URL means
A canonical URL is the address you declare as the official version of content that can be reached through several paths. The rel=canonical tag tells the engine which copy to index and which one should collect the signals the others earn. It is a strong hint rather than an instruction: honoured when the pages really are equivalent, ignored when they are not.
